The geometrical quantity in damped wave equations on a square

چکیده
The energy in a square membrane Ω subject to constant viscous damping on a subset ω ⊂ Ω decays exponentially in time as soon as ω satisfies a geometrical condition known as the “Bardos-Lebeau-Rauch” condition. The rate τ (ω) of this decay satisfies τ (ω) = 2min(−μ(ω), g(ω)) (see Lebeau [9]). Here μ(ω) denotes the spectral abscissa of the damped wave equation operator and g(ω) is a number called the geometrical quantity of ω and defined as follows. A ray in Ω is the trajectory generated by the free motion of a mass-point in Ω subject to elastic reflections on the boundary. These reflections obey the law of geometrical optics. The geometrical quantity g(ω) is then defined as the upper limit (large time asymptotics) of the average trajectory length. We give here an algorithm to compute explicitly g(ω) when ω is a finite union of squares. MSC Numbers: 35L05, 93D15

Polynomial decay rate for the dissipative wave equation
This paper is devoted to study the stabilization of the linear wave equation in a bounded domain damped in a subdomain when the geometrical control condition (see [ BLR]) of the work of C. Bardos, G. Lebeau and J. Rauch is not fulfilled. In such case, they [ BLR] proved that the uniform exponential decay rate of the energy cannot be hoped due to the existence of a trapped ray that never reaches...

Multi-layer orthotropic finite cylindrical shells with a viscoelastic core in contact with fluids are gaining increasing importance in engineering. Vibrational control of these structures is essential at higher modes. In this study, an extended version of the wave propagation approach using first-order shear deformation theory of shell motion is employed to examine the free vibration of damped ...

Because of fluctuation in leg tension, pitch motion is very effective fatigue and life safety of leg elements in tension leg structures (TLSs). In this paper an exact solution for pitch vibration of a TLS interacting with ocean wave is presented. The legs of TLP are considered as elastic springs. The flow is assumed to be irrotational and single-valued velocity potentials are defined. The effec...
